Coming from Las Vegas,Salt Lake City is a big change. Everything from the city itself, to the general atmosphere and especially the weather, it is definitely no Las Vegas. The first time I visited the city back in April, I immediately fell in love with it. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I’m originally from San Francisco and often visited Berkeley. To my surprise, Salt Lake is very similar to San Francisco and Berkeley, which are both two cities that I love and always told myself I’d like to live in a place like those cities.
Walking around downtown SLC provides for a different experience from just driving. Sometimes I feel it’s easier to just walk since parking can be hard to find, often resulting in unwillingly having to pay $5 too much. Since the first time I visited in April till now living here for almost four months, I’ve had many opportunities to walk around downtown. In doing so, I’ve been able to gain a better appreciation for the city, taking notice of the various kind of people (often very laid back and friendly-sometimes almost too friendly), the small shops and cafes (which usually are best), and the different kinds of architecture (it seems like almost every type of architecture can be found in this city).
On the many times I’ve taken the trax, I’ve realized that complete strangers are willing and ready to talk to you. You might as well engage in conversation if you’re both traveling together though may not have the same final destination. It also helps if both people are students at the U, giving more of a reason to talk. As far as the small shops and cafes are concerned, I’ve come across a small little coffeeshop that is actually a part of Sam Weller’s bookstore. I’ve seen a lot of different cafes and coffeeshops all relatively close to one another, but Sam Weller’s is the only one I’ve tried. By far, the best chai I’ve ever had :)
The variety of architecture is probably one of the things I appreciate most about Salt Lake. There’s a little bit of everything, pleasing just about every taste. Even when on campus at the U, every building has a different appeal. The fact that every building throughout the city is different, I feel that it somehow brings a certain flow and appeal that can only be defined as Salt Lake City. One of my favorite things is looking down into the valley at night
from on campus. I like being able to see the city as a whole, appreciating it from a different view as opposed to walking in the city.Overall, SLC is one of my favorite cities and the longer I stay here, the more I appreciate it and everything it has to offer. I want to try every cafe I see and explore every building every that catches my attention. Every time I walk downtown, I always find something new. There seems to be something to do for everyone, regardless of their path.
