Moving out of my parent's house has been a grand adventure. When I first relocated to Salt Lake, I was only familiar with the city in the context of musicals at the Capitol or shopping at the Gateway.
Now, I'm loving Dorm Life. As I've adjusted, I've learned quite a lot.
Lesson #1: A roommate is meant to be your BEST friend. I seriously won the jackpot on this one. Late night talks and someone to share your lunch table, a roomie is a built in companion to explore a new place with.
Lesson #2: Everyone is in the same boat. No one has a toaster and everyone's attempting to swallow philosophy for IT. This means, you are never alone. There is always someone who can relate and commiserate. What comforting knowledge.
Lesson #3: The HC is the place to socialize. If you're wondering about the food-- it's better if you don't know what it is because that way there is no expectation. Of course Mom's is better, but you'll get by. Even if you have to eat cold cereal for dinner every night (unless, like last night, there's no milk left).
Lesson#4: Shuttles make going to class in the rain possible. Never get on a blue at the Union if you're trying to get to the Heritage Center.
Lesson #5: Trax rocks! Always remember your Ucard though. Use the stops as a frame of reference. It is most convenient.
Lesson #6: There's no better way to get to know a place than to get lost there. Looking for classes the first weekend took about two hours, but I knew every possible route to each class after that. Walkabouts helped with directions around the rest of the city.
In conclusion, there is much to be learned from shaking of the nerdy hermit persona that was once my life in the basement of my family home.
