Personal Blog 2

As cheesy as this sounds, everyone has a happy place. Mine might be a little different. The joys of my life orbit around dance, music, and movies. Yeah, friends and family are in there too; same with boys, zombies, and dinosaurs. But the real story is about a backyard in Salt Lake City.

Kilby Court is the bees’ knees. At first you think the sound of seeing your favorites bands for $12 sounds great. Then you arrive and worry about walking down this dark alley. Fear is instantly lifted with the sight of Christmas lights and a fire pit. The people, music, and “buildings” can be identified as pure indie.

When you first walk in you feel like you are in a friend’s backyard chatting around the fire pit. With a stand that sells coffee and hot coco you feel welcome. A little building that sells merchandise is walled with windows. Its brightly colored green interior shines out saying come buy something. A tiny bit larger shed like building is used as the actual venue. The stage itself is tiny and pushed into the corner so more people can squeeze in. Raised just a foot off the ground, the band stands surrounded with more Christmas lights. The venue is maxed at 200 people; however, I doubt there can even be that many people in its shed like interior.

As small as it may be, I’ve never felt more at home. I’m surrounded by friendly locals singing along to my favorite songs; even the lead singer of Miniature Tigers walks around in the crowd during his “grand finally.” This place is all about feeling comfortable and friendly. I would gladly see a concert there any day.

  1. I have never been the Kilby Court! Great find. It sounds like one of the cozy little venues you might find in San Francisco or New York. Who goes there? Are there any restrictions on who can go or when? Do they feature local bands or musicians?

Very nice inviting description. I hope you're fellow students learn from you! Sounds great!
